INTRODUCTION

Meat and meat products are an important source of high quality protein, iron and vitamin in the diet of the people of Pakistan. The demand for meat and meat products is continuing to increase due to the population growth, urbanization and rising per capital income. It is a well known fact that traditional system of meat production and marketing are no longer able to meet this growing demand of quality meat as indicated by continuous to increase in prices of meat. The most pragmatic solution to meet the growing demand of meat and meat products is to increase the productivity of existing animal resources Beef in Pakistan is traditionally a by products of the Dairy sector. Generally spent animals, old bullocks and young male claves are slaughtered. Presently 8.08 (million) dairy calves are annually present in Pakistan. These dairy calves as by & product of dairy industry have potential source of quality beef production. Similarly under age and weight sheep and goats are routinely slaughtered. These animals are generally raised in a conventional method resultantly yield low carcass weight, (per unit animal meat production) and encounter high mortality.

Feedlot fattening is well researched practice at Government R&D institutes and universities. However very little efforts has so far been made to introduce this technology at farmer’s door stop. Feedlot Fattening can result in count quantum leap in meat production and within a short span of 90-100 days the carcass weight can practically be doubled under this system. Thus establishment of feedlot fattening farms provides an attractive method to meet the growing demand of beef and mutton in Pakistan. With this concept this project is launched to popularize the feedlot fattening practice among livestock farmers to increase the quantity and quality of meat and meat products.

GOAL

To increase the production of red meat i.e, veal, beef and mutton on sustainable and cost effective basis through increasing per unit animal meat production.

OBJECTIVES

  •      Establishment of feedlot fattening to optimize economical meat production
  •      Development of slaughter houses and butcheries for value addition in private sector
  •      To create linkages among the meat producers and processors
  •      Capacity building of stakeholders for meat production and  processing

LOCATION

Project horizon is throughout the country and will be implemented on demand driven basis.

PROJECT COMPONENTS

  1.  Feedlot Fattening Farms

Project key activity would be to motivate the livestock farming community to participate in feedlot fattening to double the meat production at the project target farms/areas. The project will help in establishment of lead, small and feeder farms for veal, beef and mutton production on demand driven basis.
The number of farms of various types are:

Beef                 Mutton

  • Lead                 160                   350
  • Medium            250                   450
  • Small                550                   750

Support to Fattening Farms

  • Technical support for establishing and operation of farms including shed design, feed formulation advice, critical preventive veterinary cover.
  • Financial support up to Rs1400 per fattened calf and Rs 400 per fattened sheep and goat.
  1. Slaughterhouses and Butcheries

Modern and scientific slaughter houses and butcheries will be established throughout the country:

  • Slaughter house             8
  • Butcheries                    24

 Support to Slaughterhouse and butcheries

  • Technical Support:         Feasibility for establishment and operation.
  • Financial support up to 15 % of machinery cost.
  1. Capacity Building

Capacity building will act as driver for the Stakeholder of the project and will be undertaken for all stakeholders. Stakeholders will be trained in field of modern feedlot fattening of large and small ruminants. Similarly they will be trained in meat science technology for short term (Scientist, Farmers and Butcheries) will also be provided. The training will be imparted to the feedlot farmers, slaughter houses and butcheries technicians/manpower.

  1. Linkages between producers and processors

Linkages will be created among all the stakeholders such as livestock farmers, feed millers, middle men (Beopari), slaughter houses, butcheries and exporters through formation of Meat Producers and Processor Interest Group (MPPIG).

  1. Information and Communication Network

Project information Network (PIN) will be developed based on data base on feedlot fattening farms, slaughterhouses and butcheries.

 EXPECTED IMPACT

  • The project will assist to double the production of high quality veal, beef and mutton at the project target farm / areas.
  • Self-employment opportunity will be created in rural areas and there will be an increase in the income of livestock farmers
  • Capacity building and skill enhancement of scientific manpower and other stakeholders to strength their technical know how, which will help to increase the meat production, its quality and value addition.
  • The project will also help to establish a forum namely, Meat Producers and Processors Interest  Group, for facilitating the exchange of information and better prices for stakeholders.

 HOW TO APPLY

 The farmers / investors will send their expression of interest to LDDB containing following information;

  • Name & Contact numbers
  • Postal address
  • Location of the farm
  • Farm land available
  • Availability of water

They will then be sent / given technical / economic feasibilities for feedlot fattening and asked to return an enclosed Performa gives detailed profile. The technical officer of the board will contact the interested person for further details and signings the contract.
